Instant Messages

The Instant Message feature allows you to have immediate, one-on-one, private chats in real time with other AOL members who are online at the same time as you (or with non-AOL members using AOL Instant Messenger^SM).

Incoming Instant Messages

In the upper right corner of the screen, an Instant Message icon (

) flashes, alternating with the AOL logo to notify you of a new IM or a new message update from an active IM. An audible tone will also be heard (you can turn the Instant Message sounds on your handheld on or off via the Preferences menu.) Tap the flashing icon to retrieve your new IM and display the Inst Msg screen.

Send Instant Message screen

Tap the Instant Message icon on the AOL main screen, or double-tap a buddy listed online on your Buddy List screen to display the Send Instant Message screen.
To: Enter a screen name or tap the down arrow to select from the list of active IM sessions.
Text Entry Field: Enter a message in the edit field under the To: field.
Send: Tap the Send button, which displays the Instant Message (Inst Msg) screen.

Instant Message (Inst Msg) Screen

This screen allows you to conduct one or multiple Instant Message sessions, and to keep track of your Active Sessions and Online Buddies.

Active Sessions: If you have multiple open or active sessions, tap on the down arrow in the top title bar to display the list. Tap on the desired name to switch to another session.
Message Field: Displays the current active session. If the contents extend beyond the screen limit, a scroll bar will appear so that you can view the entire contents of the current active session.
Text Entry Field: Enter a message in the entry field at the bottom.
- While in the text entry field, tap the Smiley icon () to insert emoticon(s) in your message.
- While in the text entry field, tap the ShortCut icon () to insert frequently used words or phrases stored in your handheld. (Select Shortcuts from your handheld's Preferences application to edit ShortCuts.)
Left arrow (): Returns to the AOL main screen.
Send: Tap to send the message
End: Tap to close the current session.
